Earlier this term, staff and students at Drumragh Integrated College celebrated an amazing achievement. Sean Gallagher, a year 11 student at the college, has become one of only a small number of people in the whole of Ireland to receive his glider pilot’s wings at the age of 14.
In order mark this outstanding success Sean’s instructors brought a glider to Drumragh, which certainly attracted some attention. Sean was then awarded his wings during a school assembly.
Sean’s interest in flying began while he was a child. At the age of 11 he went up in a microlight, and at 12 he started flying with the Ulster Gliding Club. His interest had become a passion, and for two years he visited the gliding club almost every weekend. On 16th September this year, he flew his first solo flight – in his own words he says this was a day he will never forget.
Sean talks of his gratitude to his parents, his instructors and his school for their support as he worked toward this remarkable achievement. He also quotes Leonardo Da Vinci, who once said, ‘Once you have tasted flight you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you will always long to return’. Our congratulations to Sean for his excellent determination, effort and skill.
