Tribute to Graham Peters

The Drumragh Integrated College family is devastated at the tragic loss of the unique and wonderful Graham Peters. Our hearts go out to his family and to all who have been touched by this truly great man.

Graham was originally from North Wales. He was very happily married and has three remarkable sons. He was the Head of English at Drumragh for over 10 years. He taught several subjects, to students of all ability levels and ages from 11 to 18. His main subject was English and he was also a committed pastoral tutor. He is remembered as inspirational by those who knew him, as was evident by the huge numbers of students, staff, governors and parents, past and present, who attended his funeral.

Graham fought a short and very courageous battle with an aggressive cancer, and he never complained. When he was discussing the decision he and his wife had made together to come home, with typical humour he commented, “We busted out.” Essentially that was Graham; he ‘busted out’ of so many things. He busted out of the negativity and the cynicism that we often see in the world, he busted out of our normal tendency to complain, he busted out of teaching in traditional ways – and was brilliant as a result – and in fact wonderfully he busted out of being normal. He was the most decent, humble, inspiring rebel you could ever hope to meet.

Personally Graham was eloquent, witty, thoughtful, considerate, caring, humble, and generous. He gave everyone he met a sense of dignity and value, as though they mattered; after meeting him people tended to walk a little taller. He was a ‘dapper dresser’, including his stylish shoes and especially his colourful socks. Graham lived his vocation as a teacher with unique brilliance, and yet he was a devoted family man.

Professionally Graham was one of the rare greats – as others have described him, a ‘legend’. In his teaching he was visionary, creative, unconventional and imaginative. He was completely professional, both as a teacher and as a Head of Department, and he led by example. He was known for his creative teaching methods. He knew there was a book in him to be written, and it is our loss that we will never be able to read it. When taking assemblies he told stories, some about his own life, and drew life lessons out of them; he was utterly engaging, a great story-teller and communicator. He taught with his classroom door open, and many of the school community could benefit from a snippet overheard simply while passing by down the corridor.

He also became involved in extra-curricular activities, including drama and a very popular chess club where the final was as tense as the world cup. He was gifted at engaging the disengaged, finding brilliant ways of connecting with students in their world. Then, building on these vital and warm connections, the inspiration to learn would follow.

Graham had one of the most colourful classrooms in the school; his walls from floor to ceiling were covered in stimulating posters, students’ work and intriguing scribblings. Simply reading his walls was an education in itself. He believed in greeting and talking personally with every student in the school. His philosophy included the assumption that he might teach them one day so he would make a start on building a relationship with them now. But he also simply believed in treating everyone with respect.

Graham leaves a huge legacy. He didn’t just lead his students to water, he inspired them to drink, deeply and with joy. He was a great man through and through, from his generous heart to his eloquent words. Our pain today reflects the privilege it has been simply to know him and to work with him. Through the impact of his life and his work within the Drumragh community, he leaves each of us the challenge to be the best that we can be.
