Learning Support

The Learning Support Department of Drumragh Integrated College is dedicated to enhancing the quality of education and life for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, by providing them with appropriate educational experiences and a beneficial range of services.

Whilst we promote an inclusive whole-school approach to special educational needs provision, there are different combinations of support available in order to help each student access the curriculum as appropriate. Small group work or individual teaching programmes, for example, are used to address specific needs. These structured learning support programmes make use of specialist teaching techniques. Emphasis is placed on enhancing the students’ communication and learning skills so they can become independent and self-reliant learners. We aim to raise the self-esteem of students through positive reinforcement. The department is well resourced with multi-sensory equipment, specialist computer programs and assessment materials.

We acknowledge the significance of multi-disciplinary provision and close links are maintained with external professionals including educational psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, hearing impaired specialists, behaviour support specialists, the ASD Service, the Child & Adolescent Service and the Inclusion & Diversity Service.

The Learning Support Department welcomes the active involvement of parents/carers to develop a co-ordinated partnership and to complement our provision.

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

Northern Ireland is increasingly a diverse multi-cultural society. Drumragh Integrated College welcomes students from around the world and seeks to help them to settle and be happy in their learning. The Learning Support Department, EAL section, makes provision for those students for whose first language is not English. The philosophy of the Department is that all students can improve and achieve in English language, to the highest level, given appropriate specialist teaching. The generic target is that students with EAL will gain competence in all four language components: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

A wide range of up-to-date teaching materials is used to provide a stimulating learning experience, to facilitate speedy progress in language acquisition. The college provides additional English lessons for students whose first language is not English. Older students in this category are also prepared for university entry-level examinations. EAL tutors ensure that students are exposed to tasks which stretch their abilities without creating insecurity in the target language. Use of the students’ first language to elicit information forms an integral part of the teaching process. Where appropriate, students are prepared for GCSE and AS/A level examinations in their first language.

In tandem with academic and educational aims is the social aspect of life at college. The provision of emotional, social and cultural support is considered of enormous importance. We believe the college community is enriched by welcoming students from around the world and that learning in a diverse community is an effective preparation for the increasingly international lifestyles of the 21st century.
