Drumragh pupil scoops top prize at nationwide Amnesty Youth Awards

A Drumragh Integrated College student walked away with the top prize in Amnesty Youth Awards at a prestigious ceremony held in London today.
Grace McSorley entered the human rights competition in the Reporter strand and beat off hundreds of entrants from across the UK.

Speaking moments after receiving the award, she said:

“I volunteer at home for the disabled. Then I looked at a school in Ghana and how different it is there. Most people think Africa is just about water issues, not about the difficulties the people with disabilities face.

“When I won it was just pretty amazing. Definitely worth the two in the morning start. I convinced myself I wouldn’t win as I’ve entered twice before and didn’t quite make it, so to win was a big surprise.”

Sonali Shah, was the host of the ceremony and added:

“I was honoured to be asked to host this years’ Amnesty Youth Awards. It is amazing to see young people across the UK take part in the competition and stand up for human rights through journalism and creative mediums. I was overwhelmed by the standard of the finalist work I have seen today and congratulate all those who have taken part.”

Grace’s entry was judged by a prestigious panel, including Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Martina Veltroni, Nia Addo-Quintyne (Youth Judge and previous winner), Ifat Gazia (SOAS) and Kathryn Bromwich (The Observer).

The Amnesty Youth Awards challenge young people aged 7 to 19 to explore human rights issues through Reporting, Photography, Poetry, Performing and Campaigning and Fundraising strands.

Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK, said:

“The Awards hold a big place in the hearts of everyone at Amnesty International. In an era when we see tragedies unfolding on our screens in places like Syria, the Central African Republic and Yemen, it is great to see the next generation cares so much.”

Amnesty’s Youth Awards are this year supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, The Observer and SOAS, University of London.

Background

The annual Amnesty Youth Awards is open to children and young people aged between seven and 19 years.

Entrants to the Reporting strand were asked to write an article or report of up to 500 words in length on a human rights-related issue.

A copy of Grace’s entry, a photograph of her and a list of the top ten is available on request from the Amnesty press office.
